I'm experimenting with a pure fighter build that's meant to be an intimidating tank. Let me know what you think, I'd be very happy to receive constructive criticism.

I'm brand new to the tanking thing; as a matter of fact, i'm brand new to the having over 25 AC thing. It looks ok to me though. I might recommend the Least Dragonmark of Sentinel. +2 to intimidate, and shield of faith.

Here is my fighter's build. I've modified this a bit to show a more realistic picture of what my geared numbers will be. I only modified relevant numbers. (e.g. I didn't change my concentration score to reflect wearing a constitution item). I apologize for the format, my character generator has apparently only taken a 6th grade level of programming.

PostSubject: Re: Intimitank build   Intimitank build Icon_minitimeTue Dec 21, 2010 1:53 pm

Okey, I've only taken a glance at these two builds, and so far I'd like too say that Power Critical and Critical Accuracy are completely useless, especially on a fighter. Improved Shield Bash may look decent, but it really isn't... You will never do any damage while shield bashing so you're better off switching between slashing with your weapon and actively blocking.

Also, unless you're planning on soloing, the spells attached too the marks are quite useless, and even if you are I doubt it's worth it picking extra dragonmark use, I bet there's something better.

And yes, Glargabull, consider getting Mark of the Sentinel...

Ohh yeah, swim is useless, pick UMD instead...

Edit 1: Lets start with Jessebell's tank... I honestly think you don't have enough dexterity. The Epic Tourney Armor (yeah I know, it's not easy too get your hands on, but I always like too think ideally) with fighter armor mastery III, Stalwart Defender III and a Max Dex +2 Blue Augmented Crystal will have 10 max dex, and so will Levik's Defender, with Stalwart Defender III and tower shield mastery III(which is the tower shield I'd go for if I were you) and I just generally prefer AC builds over the other forms of tanking since it's just basicly superior, if you can achieve enough AC that is. Alternatively I geuss you could drop some of the armor and shield mastery enchantments for other stuff since fighters need every enchantment point they can get their hands on... I wouldn't though... But even then I'd still try too up it too at least 26 dex (mastery I on armor and tower shield).

Anyway, speaking of enchantments... I just don't get some of yours... For example you get both Fighter Attack Boost and Fighter Armor Class boost, while instead you could just have gotten Human Versitility for half the cost.

Then there's the extra action boost, I'll admit it's not bad, but I think you could make do with 5 action boosts if you just plan it well. Most action boosts are only needed for bosses anyway, and are otherwise mostly just used for fun in random trash fights... Now that I think about it, might be real nice too have in VoD for example Smile Also quick side note: I did not know you could pick two different Human Adaptability I... Will be very useful when I make my own intimitank human fighter.

Then there's the extra dragonmark use, there are plenty of clickies and scrolls and whatever the hell else there is that you could use instead of wasting precious enchantment points on that shit. Not too mention that an intimitank is somewhat useless without a party, being that his only role is too prevent other partymembers from getting attacked, which should mean you'd be groupding with a cleric most of the time which can cast both those spells on you.

I'm also wondering why you didn't pick the last Dragonmark of the Sentinel... Can't really see any reason for stopping halfway, especially since the third one is the best of them all unlocking 2 Deneith Intimidation enchantments. Another feat you should look into is Force of Personality, which more or less will make Wisdom a completely useless stat. And since you seem too like charisma it should be perfect for you. (I'd drop those two extra Toughness's you picked... I doubt you'll miss 40 HP)

Last but not least, your skills... Swim really isn't... Well it's useless really. Get UMD and you can scroll Underwater Action instead. Or even better, do what I do and get an underwater action item. Though seriously, get UMD instead of swim. Or well, looking into your skill build it would seem that you choose too get haggle in the middle, dropped out tumble and alot of wierd shit happened... Really haggle ain't even that good, at least I wouldn't get it on a fighter. Fuck it lets just say it like this: Get Balance, Jump, Intimidation, Tumble and UMD. I really can't see any reason as too why you'd make it so complicated. I'd also like too add that you only need 1 point in tumble... Tumble spells, tumble items and so on will still enable you too tumble, especially if you raise your dex score.

I'll comment on yours some other time Glargabull.

PostSubject: Re: Intimitank build   Intimitank build Icon_minitimeWed Dec 22, 2010 12:42 am

As for power critical, i agree. I'd prefer to have other feats here. The reason it found its way in is because it's a bonus feat, and I couldn't decide which feat i hated the least. If I were to put some time into it, I know I can swap feats around to get some sort of defensive feat in its place. But tbh, it's not that big of a deal to me. If I were to take anything else, it would either be a save boost or another toughness; but i'm fairly certain i have the hp covered. Maybe I'll swap things around in order to take great fortitude or something.

As for extra dragonmark use, it is handy. The deflection bonus of Least scales with level, like SoF does. So it's handy to be able to throw around a few of those to anyone who wants it. The only other thing that would be of any interest to me that i can get for the ap would be lessening the armor check, and that's less useful to me than the marks.

And yes, I solo almost exclusively. The protection from energy will be very handy.

As for swim, you're absolutely right. I only took it for the low levels, before I get underwater action. The thing about UMD is it won't really do anything for me, and I won't be able to get it nearly high enough. Even if I burn 22 skill points to get it to +10, the best I could get is if I spend the money on a +15, and +6 charisma item, i could get it 28. Totally not worth the investment, as it would barely help me at all.

PostSubject: Re: Intimitank build   Intimitank build Icon_minitimeWed Dec 22, 2010 1:11 am

24 dex would sacrifice too much of the other scores. I get the AC back with CE. I'll have probably end up with 22 dex when all is said and done. +6 should be plenty. Any more, and I start losing Strength or con. I should have no problem keeping my AC high enough for what I do. Like I said, I solo almost exclusively, and even when I do group, it's not raids or anything. I can always reincarnate later if I need to. The build posted isn't necessarily an ideal tank; it's ideal for my play.

The reason for getting both Attack and AC is simple: I get twice the uses. So I have 5 attack boosts and 5 ac boosts. Not to mention defensive stance requires the use of an ac boost, so I need as many as I can get. Again, solo play weighed heavily into this build.

As for the last dragonmark, the dragonmark itself isn't that good; I probably won't even end up taking the second feat. I might take either the fort or reflex save boost instead. And a few more points in intim isn't really worth that feat slot.

As for charisma, I don't really need it that much. But it's not like +6 charisma items are hard to come by, so there's no reason not to equip one to get the bonus to charisma based skills. And +2 tomes aren't that hard to come by either. I agree wisdom is worthless, which is why I dumped it. There is no realistic way to make your will save high enough to matter. When you're facing a spell with DC 40, having even a +20 will save doesn't do you any good. It's a shame turbine didn't think to balance things like AC, DR, SR, saves, energy resistance, etc. They made casters able to get much higher DCs than is possible in pnp, without making the adjustments to saves. Lame.

Skills. The reason i threw some into tumble was to beat the armor check. I know I don't need any tumble, and there are other ways (such as taking the enhancements), but I like tumble. If nothing else, it allows options. And since movement is so slow in defensive stance, tumble is a nice option, since it isn't slowed. I just chose to go this way. You're right, haggle isn't that important, but it will do more for me than UMD will. Every little bit helps.

That being said, none of this was meant to argue with you. Rather, this is just my thought process that led me to make this build. I will certainly take your advice into consideration, and most likely, make some adjustments to the build as I level. I do plan to do some feat swapping. Also, I should note that the enhancements listed were as I leveled. I should have entered them as they would be at 20. Of course, what I have shown will change at high levels, when I do swap out things I don't need anymore. And for the other stuff, I can always reincarnate if I don't like it.

Power attack is a very popular feat that you could have in it's place, I also consider Quick Draw too be better then Power Critical. Also, Great Fortitude is the worst feat you can get for a fighter... They already have more then enough fortitude save, will save on the other hand is low which makes it a must too try too raise it in any way you can, meaning if you'll have too get a 6+ wisdom item. However, wisdom doesn't have any useful skills attached too it while charisma have intimidate and UMD, which is what makes Force of Personality such a great feat... It enables you too get the 6+ charisma item instead for the will saves, and it will also get you the two most important skills your class have.

The thing is, it isn't 'like SoF', it is SoF. It doesn't stack with SoF or protection items, which are easily obtained and actually quite useful, especially the Epic Ring of Silver Concord. Even if you solo most of the time, I bet you have a pocket cleric with you, many of them have SoF which will make that quite useless. Also the UMD check for SoF scrolls is only 20, and with a +6 charisma item and lets say... A command item you'd have 16.5, which gives you a 16/20 chance of succeding, which believe me is more then enough for buffs. At lower level you don't really need the extra AC, and it's very easy too find groups if you actually would like it... Not to mention the pocket clerics. So I can't really see any reason too get extra dragonmark use. Also, I am fairly certain that I could find a couple enchantments which you have missed since when I made my dwarven fighter I was forced too drop Fighter Strenght II and III, and Racial and Fighter Toughness II, III and IIII, which all are alot better enchantments then that one, but I'm too tired too scan through it atm, another time. And you should really get Human Versitility, it's alot better then the other two action boosts you picked since you get saves as well.

If you solo that much, I geuss it would... Can't really see why you'd make an intimitank if you solo though... Kenseis are durable enough, and does 10 times as much damage... So it would make soloing a whole lot easier. Also you didn't tell me why you didn't pick Greater Dragonmark of the Sentinel.

I am quite sure that you get a castable underwater action spell with one of the starter items, and that one has always been more then enough for me at those levels...

You are underestimating UMD my friend, there's a reason there are no 15+ UMD items in the game. If you have 24 UMD you can use any item (that I've come across at least) in the game, except the one with taint of evil. Which will get you cheaper items, at a lower level. I'd suggest you drop strenght down too 14, and intelligence down too 12 (eat a 2+ INT tome at level 9) and put those 6 points into charisma. Swap out one toughness feat for Force of Personality or even better get Weapon Focus: Slashing Weapons instead of Power Critical, and get Force of Personality instead of Weapon Focus: Slashing Weapons. This would with the items and tomes you have listed give you 7 more will saves, which is quite alot for a feat, and 3+ too both UMD and Intimidation, which is fucking awesome. For all leves up too level 10 I suggest you drop jump, you have enough strenght too reach the cap anyway.

I agree. I debated a long time as to whether or not to take power attack. That would be a main contender to replace power critical.

As to the rest, well said. I will take it under advisement. I am 100% I will do some work on my feats. And I do sort of agree about the extra dragonmark use. It isn't all that helpful. This tbh was more of a loose guide for me to work off of as I level, and I am constantly resetting enhancements to suit my needs, and as I learn more about it.

I'll consider the UMD thing, but tbh I'm not really sold. I know everyone has a fetish for it, but to me it's not really worth the effort to be able use things that I may or may not even want. Being able to use wands of blur or the like would be handy, but idk. I'll think about it.

I do appreciate your input; it is very helpful to get an outsider's view. And like I said, I'm new to the tanking thing. I just thought I'd try out having a high AC build. The reason I didn't go with kensei is because when I go offense, I go all out. I don't play the "balanced" game Razz It's actually something I need to work on. Tbh, it took a long time for me to even start taking toughness at all. My kensei builds are 100% offense. Basically barbish.
